Zombie? Vampire? Mummy? Meet the Revenant

Happy Halloween! Wrapped in linen, bones glowing through the skin, home world made of ash. The Revenant looks like it belongs in a horror movie. It's actually the race in Infitnite that's best at staying in one piece.

So what is a Revenant? A zombie? A vampire? A mummy?

None of the above. And the difference is the whole point.

In Infitnite, the Revenant is the undying race from Nihilus, and its training style is functional strength and mobility.

If you read today's newsletter, you got the short version. This is the full one: what the Revenant is, where it lives, the three lineages you can choose from, the real-world training behind all of it, and why this race means more to me than any other: I've lived the Bonebinder's story.

Revenant: Beyond Endings

Not undead. Un-dying.

The word "revenant" comes from the French revenir, "to return." In old stories, a revenant is someone who comes back.

In Infitnite, the Revenant never really left. They live in a world that's always falling apart, and they refuse to fall apart with it. That's the difference between undead and un-dying. Undead things have already lost. A Revenant is still in the fight, every single day.

What a Revenant isn't

It isn't a zombie. Zombies shamble. A Revenant is the most precise mover in our world, where every rep has a joint angle, a breath and a purpose.

It isn't a vampire. Vampires steal life from others to keep going. In Revenant lore, that's the corruption, not the hero. Revenants earn every day themselves.

It isn't a mummy. A mummy lasts by being sealed away and kept still. A Revenant lasts by doing the exact opposite: moving.

What a Revenant is

The Revenant race crest

A Revenant is a warrior held together by will, not biology. Their creed is simple: "What breaks can be rebuilt stronger." Not optimism. Engineering.

  • Known as: The Undying Soul

  • Training style: Functional / Mobility

  • Home world: Nihilus, the Ashen Veil

  • In three words: Eternal. Resilient. Transcendent.

Welcome to Nihilus

Nihilus, the Ashen Veil: an ash plain under a purple twilight sky

Nihilus sits between existence and the Void. The sky is a permanent purple twilight. Stone crumbles while you watch, and a falling leaf turns to dust before it reaches the ground.

Only one thing pushes back: motion. A body moving with intent holds the decay off. Stop moving, and the decay catches up.

So every Revenant starts the day with the Cycle: the hip hinge, the press, the loaded carry, the single-leg balance. To them it isn't a workout. It's how they stay whole.

There's a story they tell in Nihilus. A young Revenant asks her teacher what happens if she stops. The teacher holds out her hand and lets grey dust gather on her still palm. "You become this," she says. "Not tomorrow. Now."

Where fantasy meets your training

The Revenant is our functional training race. Instead of chasing one muscle or one max, Revenants train movement patterns: squat, hinge, press, pull and carry.

Those are the movements your life runs on. Lifting a kid. Loading groceries into the car. Getting up off the floor. Putting a suitcase in the overhead bin.

Revenant training comes down to four things:

  • Quality over quantity. In Nihilus, a sloppy rep speeds up the decay.

  • The whole chain. Ankles, hips, spine and shoulders working as one line.

  • Range you keep. Defend your mobility before you lose it.

  • Balance and body awareness. Knowing where your body is in space.

In my experience, this is the training that keeps you in the game the longest. Fewer setbacks, joints that keep working, and a body that's still capable decades from now. That's longevity in plain terms.

Three lineages, three ways to stay whole

Every Revenant belongs to one of three lineages. Your lineage is permanent, it shapes what your training leans into, and in the game it earns bonus XP on the work it values.

Edgewalker: the boundary-keepers

"The Void is not the enemy. Overreach is."

Edgewalkers patrol the edge where Nihilus meets the Void. Their linen wrappings glow brightest at the joints, because the joints are what they guard.

In real life: joint health, prehab and corrective work. Single-leg training, alignment and balance. Training hard without training past what your frame can hold.

Stillpoint: the silence-weavers

Male and female Revenant Stillpoints, a faint void-heart visible through translucent skin

"In the pause between reps, the body speaks. Listen."

Stillpoints keep the calm of Nihilus's inner sanctums. Through their translucent skin you can see a faint void-heart beating.

In real life: recovery. Deload weeks, active recovery and training by RPE (how hard a set felt on a 1 to 10 scale) instead of forcing the plan.

Bonebinder: the menders

Male and female Revenant Bonebinders, bone lines glowing through the skin like an X-ray made of light

"What was broken can be forged stronger at the fracture."

Bonebinders rebuild those the Void has damaged. Their bone lines glow through the skin like an X-ray made of light.

In real life: rehab and return to training. Coming back from an injury with patient, progressive loading, and building control at the end of your range.

I've coached Warriors down this exact path. Amish G., a former athlete, came to me after two ACL surgeries. "I needed a trainer that was going to get me explosive after 2 ACL surgeries," he said. We rebuilt his strength from there.

The Revenant's real enemy

Every race in Infitnite has a shadow, the dark side of its own strength. The Revenant's is Self-Destruction: grinding your joints to dust and calling it toughness.

There are two ways to fall apart in Nihilus. Stop moving, and you fade. Push through pain recklessly, and you tear yourself apart. The Revenant path runs between them. Move every day, and move well.

Why the Revenant matters to me

I tore my PCL playing high school football. After that, every time I moved my legs, I was thinking about that knee. I felt limited, so I stopped training my lower body altogether.

What changed it was getting stronger. I trained the movements I'd been avoiding, built strength and resilience in the ligaments and tissue around the knee, and my confidence came back with it. That was a huge moment for me.

Train smarter, then harder

Then I tore ligaments in my wrist attempting power cleans. I knew how to come back from a ligament injury, but this time I had to learn to train smarter before I could train harder: better progressions, safer training, more patience.

That led me to Dr. John Rusin and his Pain-Free Performance work. When I applied it to my own training, the everyday aches, the discomfort and the clicking in my shoulders virtually disappeared. I learned how my body should feel in training and out of it, and I got much better at figuring out what's behind a problem, for myself and for my clients.

Squat, hinge, lunge: the legs I used to avoid training.

Today I'm a Master Pain-Free Performance Specialist. I've used the same approach with Warriors working through their own pain and injuries, and it's built into the Revenant's Pain-Free Performance workout.

Meet my Revenant

When I made my own Revenant, I chose Bonebinder. "What was broken can be forged stronger at the fracture." That's my training story in one line.

This is him: a Bonebinder Champion in black Adamantine armor, halberd in hand, standing in the ash of Nihilus.

Which one are you?

  • Edgewalker if you train hard and want to keep training hard for decades.

  • Stillpoint if you're great at training and terrible at resting.

  • Bonebinder if you're coming back from an injury, or tired of the same one flaring up.

If you have an open avatar slot (a free character slot), create your Revenant, pick your lineage and start the Cycle. Then tell me in the Warrior's Circle, the game's community forum, which one you chose and why.

Happy Halloween, Warrior. Stay un-dying!

Revenant FAQ

Is a Revenant undead?

No. In Infitnite, Revenants are un-dying, not undead. They live in Nihilus, a world that decays the moment anything stops moving, and they stay whole through daily, intentional movement.

What training style is the Revenant?

Functional training and mobility. Revenants train movement patterns (squat, hinge, press, pull and carry) with a focus on quality reps, joint health, balance and range of motion you keep for life.

What are the three Revenant lineages?

Edgewalker (joint health, prehab and corrective work), Stillpoint (recovery, deloads and training by RPE) and Bonebinder (rehab and returning to training after an injury). Each lineage earns bonus XP on the work it values.

Can I change my Revenant's lineage later?

No. Race and lineage are permanent for that Avatar (your in-game character), so pick the lineage that fits how you train today. If you have an open avatar slot, you can create another Avatar with a different race or lineage.
